Use Chore Miner in a two-household family
Set up shared routines for separated parents and co-parents, carry progress between households, and understand nearby syncing.
Before you begin
- Use one shared Chore Miner family for the child across both households.
- Arrange an initial nearby meeting to pair the parent devices and the child’s device. Both apps must be open to connect.
- Choose one parent device to create the family and add the child’s profile.
- On that device, open Family → Connect another parent and leave the fresh invitation open.
- On the other parent’s device, join using that QR code. Keep both devices nearby and approve the enrollment on the inviting device.
- The joining parent sets their own parent PIN and saves their own recovery code outside the app.
- Pair the child’s device with their existing profile. Check that both parent devices and the child’s device show the same child and saved progress.
Quest schedules are shared across the family. Chore Miner does not automatically detect which household the child is in, switch routines by location, or maintain separate household wallets. Household names in quest descriptions are instructions for your family, not an automatic scheduling rule.
- Together, choose which responsibilities apply in both households, such as reading or putting away belongings.
- For a responsibility specific to one household, include that household’s agreed name in the quest title and explain when it applies in the description.
- Agree on gem values, approval requirements, and who will provide each real-life reward. Put delivery details in the reward description.
- Review changes together before editing or deleting shared quests, rewards, or badges. Sync afterwards so the child sees the current plan.
- Open Chore Miner on the child’s device and the parent device in the current household. Keep both apps open nearby with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled.
- Approve completed work and check any rewards awaiting delivery.
- Open Settings → Devices & sync on the parent device and tap Sync now if needed.
- Wait for the sync to finish, then check that the child’s gem balance and quest list are current.
- Send the same child device with the child when practical. Its saved family information travels with it.
- Connect the child’s device to the available Wi-Fi and keep Bluetooth enabled. Open Chore Miner on that device and the receiving parent’s paired device nearby.
- On the parent device, open Settings → Devices & sync and tap Sync now if needed.
- Wait for the exchange to finish. Review pending submissions, the child’s current balance, and rewards awaiting delivery.
- Continue using the same child profile. The child keeps their saved gems, badges, history, and mining progress across Wi-Fi networks.
A child has 200 gems and earns 25 more after a parent approves a quest in one household. After nearby syncing, the child’s traveling iPad shows 225 gems.
- The child takes that iPad to the other household. The saved 225-gem balance remains on it during travel.
- The child and the other parent open their paired apps nearby and sync. The second parent receives the recorded quest approval and updated family information.
- If the child then buys a 50-gem reward, sync that purchase and check the accepted balance before providing it. With no other changes, the child has 175 gems.
- When the child returns, sync again with the first parent’s device to share the purchase and its delivery status.
- Pair both child devices with the same existing child profile while they are nearby with an authorized parent device.
- Before a household transition, bring paired devices together so the child’s latest activity can be transferred. A paired parent phone or child device that travels between households can carry the updates.
- Open the relevant apps nearby at each end and let syncing finish before relying on a balance or providing a reward.
- If no paired device travels and the devices never meet nearby, treat each household’s displayed information as its last synced copy.
Multiple parents can make changes offline. Sync reconciles recorded actions, including competing purchases; a balance on an offline device may not yet include another device’s recent activity. Agree on reward delivery so the same real-life reward is not provided twice.
- Either parent can review a pending quest after receiving it through sync. Check the work before approving.
- Keep parent approval required on quests where you want an adult to check completion.
- Sync before spending gems or making overlapping adjustments whenever possible.
- Check that a reward purchase was accepted after syncing, then have the parent providing the reward mark it delivered.
- If a purchase is declined after reconciliation, review its status and the child’s current balance before trying again.
Authorized parents share access to the family’s profiles, settings, and history. The app does not provide private household-only records or restricted co-parent permissions. Parent activity alerts arrive when nearby devices exchange updates; it does not send remote notifications to a parent in another household. Optional local reminders use that device’s last synced information.
- Use each parent’s own PIN and recovery code. Do not share them with the child or the other parent.
- Keep the parent portal locked before handing a shared device to the child.
- Review Settings → Devices & sync if a device is replaced or access should be removed.
- Export an encrypted backup regularly, particularly before replacing a device or changing the family connection.
